The final games of the Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League took place at Red Bull Arena on Thursday, October 19th. Kearny High School’s girls’ and boys’ soccer teams participated in the competition, which was intense. The presence of Kearny’s cheerleaders and a large number of fans from Kearny High School added to the excitement. Unlike other games with high scores like 5-0 or 8-0, both matches were closely contested with very few goals. Here is a summary of the games.
The first game between the girls’ soccer teams of Bayonne and Kearny started slowly, with relatively fewer fans in attendance. Both teams played cautiously, resulting in no immediate goals or strong attacks. Towards the end of the first half, Kearny managed to score a goal, taking the lead against Bayonne. However, Bayonne quickly equalized, making the score 1-1 for the rest of the game. Both teams defended well, preventing each other from scoring during two additional overtimes, which led to a penalty shootout. The goalkeepers, tired after a long and stressful game, may not have been in their best form. There were unsuccessful attempts to maintain the goal line, with no significant margin in the scores. Finally, Kearny’s goalkeeper, Aracely Vasquez, made an exceptional block, resulting in a penalty score of 4-5 in favor of Kearny. Fans are incredibly proud of Kearny High School’s girls’ soccer team for their efforts, as they became the county champions.
Soccer fans eagerly awaited the boys’ match between St. Peter’s Prep and Kearny. As the first game was nearing its end, everyone rushed to their seats. The team hung a banner over the benches to commemorate Coach Galka’s 300th soccer win, adding to the excitement. The team seemed distracted, especially after St. Peter’s Prep scored a goal in the first half. However, the cheers from the crowd grew louder, as everyone believed Kearny would bounce back after defeating St. Peter’s Prep 5-0 just a few weeks ago. In the second half, both teams managed to score a goal each, with St. Peter’s Prep ultimately securing a 2-1 victory, making them the county champions for the night.
