This year, Kearny High School welcomed a new addition to its roster – the Art Club. Mr. Costello initiated the formation of the club, which focuses on various forms of art during its meetings. Over the past few weeks, members have explored the comic book style, crafting their own short stories and characters.
To gain insights into the club’s history and its members, I attended meetings and conducted interviews with Mr. Costello, the club’s teacher, and Briana, the founding member and club president.
“Briana, how did the club start for you?” I inquired.
“Currently, I am enrolled in Mr. Costello’s Exploring Art class, and he noticed that I enjoy doodling and drawing characters. When he first asked if I was interested in a club, I became one of the earliest members.”
I followed up, “After joining, how did you become interested in becoming president?”
“Well, I wasn’t initially interested, but after a while, I thought I could bring my experience as the president of other clubs and do a good job here. So when the vote started, I decided to run, and, well, I guess I won.”
I then asked Briana if there were any special drawings or artists she’d like to mention. She responded, “I like to think there is no single great piece, but every art piece made with heart and care is remarkable. So that’s everyone in the club!”
After the interview with Briana, I sat down with Mr. Costello to get his perspective on the club’s journey.
“What was the journey for you to start the club?” I asked.
“I noticed the Art Club wasn’t renewed by the former teacher, so I decided I could try to restart it. I was formerly the teacher for the art club at Whippany Park High School, so it seemed like a good fit. I made some announcements and invited some of my students who were interested in art.”
I followed up with a question about how the club has been so far.
“So far, it’s been great. Artists from around the school meet here and socialize, all while practicing new art styles they haven’t tried before.”
I concluded the interview by asking Mr. Costello about any long-term plans for the club.
“I hope to get a budget in order for the club later in the year and try to invite guest speakers and organize trips. Other than that, I suppose organically grow and maintain a core group of members.”
The Art Club collaborated with the K-Birds, showcasing their talents in the Halloween decorations during the Halloween Maze. The club, although new, appears to be a mainstay for KHS.
