The Return of Battle of the Classes

Juliette Viera

In a galaxy far far away, Cheers fill up the humid Kearny High School gymnasium. Banners and balloons were found all around the room as the bleachers continued to be bustling with incoming students sporting their grade’s color. Seniors wearing black and Juniors wearing red, matching the school’s official colors. The sophomore’s sported blue and the “fabulous” freshmen with green. This only means the battle of the classes is making a comeback! The BOC is a school event where participants from every grade level get to compete against each other in fun games and even a dance battle.

This year marks the return of the games since 2019 after Covid-19 postponed all school events for almost 2 years. The theme, courtesy of the superintendents/advisors, is Star Wars. Hence the t-shirts worn by our participants and staff, “The return of the BOC”. The Junior class of 23’won for sticking with the theme.

The 4 grades competed in 6 games as well as a category for the best-designed class flag, dance, and the penny war held a week before the game. The freshmen and Seniors started off strong with the first few games leaving the middle classes fighting amongst themselves.

Seniors were able to top the scoreboard the majority of the time as the overly confident juniors caught up halfway through the games. Freshmen surprisingly, though with very little support from the crowd, were able to win a few games embarrassing all the upperclassmen. Sophomores stressed out all their abilities but hey they are a middle child, which makes sense.

After the games, the dance battle came up as each grade was responsible for choreographing a dance and choosing music to win over the judges.

Freshmen went first and gave an underwhelming dance to the music the upperclassmen used before. Sorry freshmen, you deserved that booing. They scored a 4 for their performance.

Sophomores went next and gave a nostalgic dance to the soundtrack of the Disney Channel original movie “Teen Beach Movie”. Beachballs, singles in the air, air guitar playing, and a kid with Meghan knees all scored, in the end, a solid 10.

Juniors went third with a Star Wars-themed performance and gave the judges a lightsaber battle, breaking off two lightsabers in the act. If this were the Met Gala they would be praised for following the theme with great execution. Boys in BBLs, nerds in capes and confetti flying in the air as well as students, Juniors scored only a 6. Your writer however felt that was underscored and was the most creative dance out of all. (Not saying this because I am a Junior)

Seniors finished the night with a final performance displaying last year’s cheers and sentimental goodbye bows. The funeral crew brought out their athletic uniforms and ended their dance with signs displaying the words “And Were Off”. Their performance managed to get them a score of 8.

The conclusion of the BOC ends with seniors cheering “whose house? Our house!” as they won 1st place with a total of 76 points. Juniors managed to earn 2nd place with a score of 68. Sophomores and Freshmen placed in a tie with a score of 54. Additional scores like the flag design grade is in the image shown in the photo gallery above.

Congratulations to the Class of 22’ as they end their school year with at least one win to finish it off. They choose to ignore the powderpuff fiasco 😉
