Battle of the Classes? No Decades!

Juliette Viera

With the year coming closer and closer to an end, so do the final events conducted by students and staff members. The yearly traditions are always looked forward to every time and are full of excited students ready to participate for the sake of school memories. This year will be the second time the school ran the Battle of the Classes after the pandemic with the theme of “Battle of the Decades” having each class represent a specific decade they have little memory of or never lived through. The freshmen were supporting the ‘70s era, sophomores with the ‘80s, juniors with the ‘90s, and seniors with the early 2000’s.

Here’s the breakdown of all the games competed amongst the classes.

Starting the competition with the scooter race: Each team needs to complete a race of ten rounds going around a cone on those nostalgic gym scooters. The first to complete the 10 rounds wins. Lots of hair got stuck and an awkward silence ghosted around the crowd. Thankfully they realized we needed background music.

(List from 1st place to last)

Seniors – 10

Juniors – 8

Sophomores- 6

Freshmen- 4

The second game was the Equipment Carry race: Each team needs to run to the other side, pick up an object and return to their base, handing the object to the next runner as they run and collect another object adding up the amount of equipment being held. The trick: Try not to drop anything as you run.

Seniors – 10

Juniors- 8

Sophomores- 6

Freshmen-4

The third game conducted was an egg toss competition: Pairs had to toss an egg back and forth without breaking the egg until they become the last one standing. Eggs are expensive nowadays so congrats to the Juniors for saving that cash.

Seniors-8

Freshmen-6

Sophomores – 4

The fourth game is a new addition to the games: The Cup challenge relay. Each team has to complete rounds of different party cup games and become the first to finish in order to win. For students who party all the time the seniors did not achieve the victory we expected.

The fifth game was an eating contest: A pretty straightforward competition involving a packet of Oreo cookies and two members of each class.

The sixth game was the Mental Challenge where each team had to write down whatever was on that blurry sad projector screen.

Freshmen-4

The next game is also a new addition to the Battle of the classes called “table surfing” involving one team member on top of a table surfing through a crowd of their own class teammates. Safety Hazard? No neverrrr….

Seniors- 10

Juniors- 8

Sophomores- 6

Freshmen- 4

The last battle was a round of “Can Jam”: Two pairs from each class had to get as many frisbees into the can before time ran out. Special shoutout to Senior Claudia Zmuda for showing off great skills wowing many people in the crowd.

In addition to the number of points earned during the physical games, some side competitions helped the teams rack up some extra points. This includes the Penny war challenge proposed by the class of 2024 which was won by the Seniors. Thank you to the seniors who sacrificed good cash for the sake of school spirit. Judges were later asked to score each team’s flags and somehow the Seniors won with their 2000s flag that wasn’t even in the class color. The Kearnian believes these points should have gone to the Juniors for their much bigger and more extravagant flag design. Another special shoutout to Junior Nia Brathwaite for her impressive flag waving skills. She certainly got her steps in.

Judges were also asked to judge each class’s mascot. This round rightfully went to the class of 2025 Sophomores with their own personal Michael Jackson mascot.

No school event is done without a dance-off! At the very end of the competition, each class was responsible for choreographing a 3 min dance using songs that came out during their designated time period.

The Freshmen went first with a 70s throwback using songs such as “We will rock you” by bohemian rhapsody, “Staying alive” by the Gee Bees, and more. The freshmen team was a small group of brave new students who competed with all of their efforts. For the first time performing at The Battle of The Classes the class of 2026 won 12 points coming in 3rd place for the dance portion.

The sophomore class went next with a selection of songs from the 80s including “Wake me up before you go” by Wham! and a memorable appearance from MJ himself, He he! The Sophomore class takes the cake on best dressed as they stuck to the theme wearing neon-colored sweatbands and leotards creating their own personal aerobic session. The class, unfortunately, scored a 16 putting them in 2nd place for the dance portion.

The juniors class went next with a recreation of 90 hip-hop attire wearing gold chains and flannel shirts. However many of these songs seem to be closer to the early 2000s, the Juniors still showed off their dance routine with blonde Brittany Spears and once again the class of 2024 brings out the man with Megan’s knees. Despite their dance getting an 8, putting them in last place, their cheering squad outdid the audience with lots of cheers, party horns, and fun chants.

Last but not least the class of 2023 seniors performed their rendition of 2000s music with excitement and energy. With the biggest group of participants, they were able to keep up the 2000s nostalgia with fun tricks involving people *almost* flying in the air and putting in an homage to the 2004 classic “Mean Girls”. The seniors ended their performance on the sentimental side jumping to the song of the High school musical song soundtrack ranking in 1st place with a score of 20 points.

The total scores ended off with Freshmen in 4th place 64 points, sophomore 92 points, Juniors 96 and lastly one top…SENIORSSSS! Are we surprised? Congratulations to the class of 2023 and great job to all the participating students who showed up and showed out last night.
