Kearny Girl’s Basketball Achievements

Arwa Ouali

Recently in sports, two of our Kearny girls’ basketball players reached a milestone in their sports career- they each earned 1000 points this season. Seniors Ava Hyams and Maci Covello both have accomplished this goal during this month.

I had a chance to interview them both about their motivation in playing basketball and what this achievement means to them both.

Ava Hyams:

      1. When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball at a very young age, 4 years old or around that time.

      2. What does playing basketball mean to you?

Basketball is a very large part of my life and my family’s life, it helps me get away from the world and keeps my stress levels down a lot, because all I think about is basketball when I play.

       3. How did you feel when you heard that you earned 1000 points?

I felt very accomplished in that moment and also having my name on a banner for the rest of my life is a great feeling, but after it happened I just wanted our team to keep winning games.

      4. What message would you give to aspiring athletes who are reaching for this feat?

I would say to never set your bar low at all because there are so many goals you can reach by just not giving up and always pushing through adversity and others holding you back. Never let anyone tell you, you can’t do that.

Maci Covello:

        1. When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball at 7 years old.

       2. What does playing basketball mean to you?

Basketball is so much more than just a sport. It teaches you many life lessons like patience, discipline, loyalty, and hard work. OUr amazing coaching staff does a great job of making our program a family. Basketball means everything to me and I am so proud to be a part of this program.

       3. How did you feel when you heard that you earned 1000 points?

I felt so happy and proud!

        4. What message would you give to aspiring athletes who are reaching for this feat?

I would say to not stress and play your game and before you know it 10000 points will be there.
