Kearny High School has over forty clubs to join this school year. We interviewed the directors of the three most popular clubs, K-Birds, Model UN, and the Alpha and Omega Christian Club.

First up is K-Birds, our school’s well-loved and talented choir. The group is made up of talented kids that like singing. We asked the director, Ms. Gonzalez, one thing that stands out from our K-Birds. She says that other honor choirs only do competitions with their voices. But at Kearny High, kids also complete community service hours by singing at events throughout the year. Kids sing their songs, and use this music to try and have a positive impact on our community. Another question that was asked was, “What’s the audition process like?” for anyone out there wondering. There is a day or two dedicated for kids to audition after school. The kids pick any song of their choice, so they don’t feel more pressured or nervous than they may already be. They sing in front of multiple judges, which are other adult musicians. Something very fun they do during the school year is that the group heads to competitions and on many fun field trips. It’s well deserved, as the K-Birds are extremely passionate about singing and music. They give up their free time throughout every week, and always bring their positive, enthusiastic, and occasionally dramatic energy to practice. A major upcoming event for the K-Birds is the winter concert. You will get to see and hear the K-Birds, along with the Kearny High band, perform lovely music!

Another major club that is yet to be discussed is Model UN. In this club, students pretend to be delegates in the United Nations and act out real-life scenarios where they try to learn the complexities and reality of international law and have fun while doing so. How the club works is kids first vote on one of a few scenarios to act out, then they choose the countries they want the role of, and act out the scenarios. It’s a simple yet fun afterschool activity to do in their free time. Director of the club, Mr. Curatola highly recommends this club to freshmen who want to go to a prestigious college in the future. Also, to those who may have an interest in world politics or debate, you may want to consider joining! Model UN can also be for competitive people who may not be interested in athletics. However, the group is not playing at a competitive level yet, but would like to level up to that aspect in the future. The Model UN group’s atmosphere is very fun, argumentative, and loud, but it can also turn towards relaxed calmness at times. Sadly, no trips can be made due to lack of power, but the group would like to do so in the future. Who knows? The big dream for this group is to go to the United Nations in New York, so let’s hope one day it can come true!

Last but certainly not least folks! We have the Alpha and Omega Club, a warm group of around thirty students who meet every Friday to talk about faith, Jesus, read the Bible, and share their journey with God. The students love attending this club, they say it’s a safe and comfortable space for them, almost like a second home. Students also bring worship songs to sing together, and sweet, encouraging messages which demonstrate their peaceful and positive environment. On a scale from one to ten, Miss Coco, the club leader says “the group’s spiritual energy is definitely a ten.” Unfortunately, the club doesn’t have any field trips at the moment, but they would like to have some. So, if you’re looking for a club about God and faith, the Alpha and Omega Club is right up your alley! The club is extremely welcoming to new members, and would love to see some new faces this school year! If you’re a religious person, or would like to look into it, maybe check out this club when you can!
Remember, it’s very good to join clubs and be involved, it will most definitely enhance your school year experience! If you want members of the Kearnian to write about your club in future articles, please give Mr. Curatola a call in room 236
